BJP Slams Trinamool Government Over Gang Rape and Murder of Kolkata Doctor, Accuses Mamata Banerjee of Protecting Criminals
New Delhi, The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal, accusing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of shielding criminals in the wake of the gang rape and murder of a female resident doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. During a press conference at the BJP headquarters on Saturday, party spokesperson Shahzad Poonawala condemned the state government's handling of the case, accusing it of prioritizing the protection of the accused over justice for the victim.
Poonawala expressed the nation's collective outrage, stating, "Everyone in this country is angry and demanding justice. But instead of delivering justice, the Trinamool Congress government is focused on protecting the rapists and suppressing those who are fighting for justice." He provocatively suggested that TMC could stand for "Taliban I want," criticizing the government's authoritarian approach.
He further accused the Mamata Banerjee administration of behaving like a dictatorship, drawing comparisons to Indira Gandhi and Kim Jong-un. Poonawala highlighted the recent transfer of 43 doctors who had raised their voices against the incident, calling it a "Talibani fatwa." He also criticized the Kolkata Police for allegedly sending notices to citizens and journalists who spoke out against the government, pressuring them to remove social media posts.
The BJP spokesperson alleged that 5,000 "goons" were dispatched to disrupt peaceful protests, vandalize the crime scene, and destroy evidence at RG Kar Hospital. He also criticized those who claim to be defenders of the Constitution for remaining silent on the issue.
Poonawala's remarks came as the National Commission for Women (NCW) and the Calcutta High Court took a firm stance against the Mamata government, with the NCW's inquiry committee highlighting significant lapses in security, infrastructure, and the investigation of the horrific rape-murder case of the trainee doctor in Kolkata.
