New Coastal Road Connection to Bandra-Worli Sea Link Opens Friday
Mumbai: A major traffic improvement is set to take place in Mumbai as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announces that northbound vehicles on the Coastal Road will gain direct access to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) starting this Friday.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, accompanied by Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, will inaugurate the new ‘bow-string’ arch bridge today. The bridge is designed to streamline traffic flow by connecting the Coastal Road directly to the BWSL.
According to a senior BMC official, vehicles traveling northbound from South Mumbai to Bandra will benefit from this new direct route between 7 am and 11 pm. However, southbound vehicles will continue to use the existing route until the Coastal Road sections are fully integrated with the sea link.
Currently, the Coastal Road is operational in phases. The southbound segment, stretching from Worli to Marine Drive, opened on March 11, while the northbound section from Marine Drive to Haji Ali became operational on June 10. The extension from Haji Ali to Worli followed on July 11. This latest development marks the fourth phase in the road's phased opening.
Despite the progress, traffic congestion persists near the Worli exit during peak hours due to the lack of a direct connection to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The new bridge is expected to alleviate some of this congestion, allowing motorists to travel from Marine Drive to Worli in under 15 minutes.
Officials from the BMC are optimistic that the enhanced connectivity will significantly improve travel times and reduce traffic bottlenecks in the area.
