New Delhi:Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in Brunei today, marking a historic milestone as he becomes the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the Southeast Asian nation. This two-day visit aims to bolster bilateral relations and celebrate 40 years of diplomatic ties between India and Brunei.
Invited by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, who is the second-longest reigning monarch globally after Queen Elizabeth II of the UK, PM Modi's visit underscores the importance of strengthening diplomatic and economic connections. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah is renowned for his vast wealth and opulent lifestyle, highlighted by his impressive car collection.
With a staggering net worth of $30 billion, largely attributed to Brunei’s rich oil and gas reserves, the Sultan boasts the world’s largest private car collection, valued at an estimated $5 billion. His collection includes over 7,000 vehicles, among which are approximately 600 Rolls-Royces—a feat that has earned him a Guinness World Record. The collection also features around 450 Ferraris, 380 Bentleys, and other luxury brands such as Porsches, Lamborghinis, and McLarens.
Notable vehicles in the Sultan’s collection include a Bentley Dominator SUV valued at about $80 million, a Porsche 911 with Horizon Blue paint and an X88 power package, and a Rolls-Royce Silver Spur II plated in 24-carat gold. A custom-designed Rolls-Royce with an open roof and an umbrella, adorned with gold, is among his prized possessions. Additionally, a gold-coated Rolls-Royce was acquired for his daughter Princess Majededah’s wedding in 2007.
The Sultan’s opulence extends beyond his car collection. He resides in the Istana Nurul Iman Palace, which holds the Guinness World Record for the largest residential palace, spanning over two million square feet and embellished with 22-carat gold. The palace features five swimming pools, 1,700 bedrooms, 257 bathrooms, and 110 garages. He also owns a private zoo with 30 Bengal tigers and various bird species, along with a Boeing 747 aircraft.
PM Modi's visit signifies a pivotal moment in India-Brunei relations, paving the way for enhanced collaboration and celebration of their longstanding diplomatic partnership.
