Taiwan's New Office in Mumbai: China's Opposition and India's Response
Mumbai: Following the recent inauguration of Taiwan's Taipei Economic and Cultural Center (TECC) in Mumbai, China has lodged a strong diplomatic protest with India. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China and urged India to handle Taiwan-related issues with prudence.
The TECC was inaugurated on October 17, 2024, bringing the total number of Taiwanese offices in India to three. Previously, Taiwan had established offices in Delhi and Chennai. The new office aims to provide services in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry has warned against any official communication with Taiwan. Mao Ning said, “China firmly opposes any official contact between countries that have diplomatic relations with us and Taiwan.” She also emphasized that India should adhere to its political commitments to avoid hindering the process of improving China-India relations.
All eyes are on the new development between India and Taiwan, particularly regarding its potential impact on India-China relations. Indian officials have yet to provide an official response, but it is clear that India's interest and ties with Taiwan are rapidly increasing.
Analysts believe that this situation could present a significant strategic opportunity for India, but serious reactions from China on such matters must also be taken into account.
