Global Protests Erupt Demanding Justice for Trainee Doctor Raped and Murdered in Kolkata
New Delhi:In a powerful display of international solidarity, thousands of protesters gathered across more than 130 cities in 25 countries on Sunday, demanding justice for the trainee doctor who was tragically raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
The demonstrations, which began in Japan, Australia, Taiwan, and Singapore, rapidly spread to various cities in Europe, with over sixty protests planned in the United States. In Stockholm, Sweden, a large group of women assembled in Sergels Torg square, singing Bengali songs and holding signs that called for accountability for the crime and enhanced safety for Indian women.
Dipti Jain, a British citizen and alumna of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, spearheaded the global protests. Speaking to Reuters, Jain expressed the collective shock and outrage, saying, "The news of this heinous crime committed on a young trainee doctor while on duty numbed and shocked each of us at the sheer ruthlessness, brutality, and disregard for human life." Jain had previously organized a similar protest for female doctors in the UK last month.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case on Monday, as the global community watches closely for justice and accountability.
